Naturopathic Medicine:  The Art and Science of Natural Healing

Welcome to the Muskoka Naturopathic Family Practice.  

My name is Howard Owens. I am a licensed Naturopathic Doctor, a graduate of the Canadian college of Naturopathic Medicine, and I've practiced in downtown Bracebridge, Ontario since Fall 2001.

 Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) employ a unique and comprehensive approach to improving health and treating illness. The primary goal of treatment is to address the cause of disease. The patient is seen as a whole person and the ND takes into account  the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions when diagnosing and developing treatment.  NDs focus on prevention and working with nature and the body’s ability to heal itself.

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic Medicine is a comprehensive approach to treating illness and preventing disease. The philosophy of naturopathic medicine is based on the following principles:

1) First do no harm – Naturopaths try to approach illness in the least invasive ways possible, using the most natural medicines they can.

2) To work with the healing powers of nature and the body, focusing on boosting the body’s ability to heal itself.

3) Treat the cause, not merely the symptoms, of disease.

4) Treat the whole person and not their separate parts.  Naturopaths believe that in order to truly heal, the entire person must be taken into consideration and cared for.

5) Doctor as teacher – Naturopaths are taught not only to heal but also to teach patients how to heal and help themselves.

6) Prevention is the best treatment—naturopathic medicine includes a variety of techniques         to    prevent disease even the total absence of any symptoms or abnormal lab results.
