Question: The Three Wise Men or Magi brought 3 valuable gifts from the East to the Infant Jesus.  We know why gold was valuable, what about the Frankincense and Myrrh?

Answer:  They are both resinous saps from plants with important histories in healthcare.  Myrrh (Commiphora mol-mol) was a significant local antiseptic used especially for throat, gum disease, mumps, colds and flu plus skin problems (from abscesses and acne to athletes foot).  It also has anti inflammatory, expectorant, astringent, antispasmodic and digestive settling effects.

Frankincense (Boswellia serrata) was an important anti- inflammatory medication for its day.  Frankincense has been researched for its beneficial effects in treating bronchial asthma, multiple sclerosis, osteo and rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

Medicine would be lost without good anti-microbials and anti-inflammatories.  2002 years ago these remedies were being used successfully in many parts of the world.  Today they are still being used for many of these same conditions.  Health care solutions which are effective for millennia?  Those men certainly were wise!
